Dane Wilborn

An interesting path brought our barn manager, Dane Wilborn, to where he is today. Dane grew up in Grosse Pointe Woods, but unlike most kids in the area, he developed a passion for horses strong enough to take him across America and back.

As a kid, Dane often rode his bike over to the GPHC to look at the horses, but just looking wasn't enough. Throughout middle school and high school, he attended horse camp at the YMCA Storer Camps in Napoleon, Michigan where he first began learning the ins and outs of horses and horsemanship. The summer before his senior year, he went with the YMCA to Wyoming to spend a week at a dude ranch, and this is where Dane’s love for the horseman’s lifestyle really took off. He spent the week riding horses daily, going on cattle drives, learning how to rope, and just about anything else you could imagine doing on a dude ranch. He loved it so much that the next summer he went back on his own and worked for the ranch the entire summer. This time around, he was leading trail rides, riding in parades, fixing fences, herding horses, cutting and baling hay, and getting the full cowboy experience. The culmination of his summer was the opportunity to help guide thirty people on the 100-mile "Outlaw Trail Ride" across Wyoming.

From Wyoming, Dane headed off to college at Arizona State University to study Agribusiness. During this time, Dane found employment at a working cattle ranch in the Superstition Mountains, and learned that being a working cowboy was very different from entertaining guests at a dude ranch. Dane was placed in charge of a herd of over 150 cow/calf pairs, grazing on over 100 square miles of pasture in the mountains. Typical tasks included riding fences, branding and processing cattle, capping springs out in the mountains to turn into a water source for the cattle, rounding up the herd, catching runaways and more. In his free time, he would go to friends' ranches for round-ups, working without pay "just for the fun of it."

After the ranch job came to an end, Dane managed a livestock feed store for four years, where he acquired both management skills and a basic knowledge of chicken, horse, cattle, dog, goat and pig nutrition. While in Arizona, Dane spent his spare time riding Saddle Bronc at rodeos and was also an avid Rock Crawling and Offroading enthusiast.

Dane graduated in 2010 with a Bachelors Degree in Agribusiness from the W.P. Carey School of Business, and has served us well here at the GPHC ever since. His devotion to the job, the horses here and the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club itself is deep-seated and enduring. His excellent organizational skills, background knowledge on feeding and horse care, attention to detail, and personal concern for the well-being of the horses gives our owners confidence that they are leaving their horses in the best hands possible.
